We should be commanded to organize.

So much time is wasted when we aren't really organized. That it true and magnified when it comes to genealogy research.

For the last three months I have been training new full time family history missionaries. Most of them come with the desire to become excellent researchers as they are here on their missions. In that process we spend time researching and documenting our findings with their first 5 generations. We use research logs as a big part of knowing where we have been and what we have discovered.

In those 30 people there are: their spouses, their children, their children's descendants, and each have ancestors to confuse the intelligent. It takes only a mornings worth of research to have so many logs, photographs, copies of censuses, birth and death documents, and websites visited that one can easily have scrambled their brains.

Thus my new genealogy commandment: "Be Ye Therefore Organized:!

Taking the time to carefully follow this awesome system will require your focus at first but will reward you and your posterity forever. How is that for a promise?

I was pleased that so many clicked into the previous article about being organized. I am convinced this was a great thing for everyone to implement.

There was one problem - the concept was confusing to implement. I wonder how many were like me and did most of it, or like Kathleen who tore her hair out and screamed a bit. As we decided to take another more in depth look at the details we discovered that Barry Ewell had done his own version, very similar, and that he has made it easier to follow and implement.

I like his modifications.

Sometimes Our Parents & Grandparents Hid The Truth, Even My Grandmother Blanch Bingham?

Our Grandmother Blanche Bingham had a rough life at times. I wrote previously from her writings as an old lady, how she said she was lonely. Click Here We have other writings where she said how happy she was. We are told things we are having a hard time verifying. Her first husband, Grundy, seemed to be a bigomist, so the story goes. I was told as a young person this marriage was anulled. We see in her writings the word divorce. Then she married Cragun and it seems those were hard times. Simeon Cragun, my grandfather died. At that time my father, Royal Cragun was the oldest at home. He was a responsible type person and went to work, foregoing any higher education, to support Grandmother and his younger siblings.

Yesterday, my sister Nancy called. Being the bloodhound detective she is, and prompted by the recent Who Do You Think You Are show, decided to check out the bigamy story.  She called and asked me to go to Ogden, where many of these events likely took place. It seems the dates of marriages, births, etc. aren't matching up.

Seeing the document beats hand me down stories.

Be Ye Therefore Organized

This system will put your research in such an organized state that you will not believe you did it.

It will not only benefit your efforts, but will be in such great shape that someone else can easily pick up where you left off.  They will think you were amazing.

Successful genealogy research depends upon being able to find information again which you already have. To do so you need a simple system for organizing paper copies of family group records, pedigree charts, documents, notes, and research logs and helps.

The steps given below for setting up a filing system were developed and refined over several years. While this system is not the only way to organize family history information, it is inexpensive, simple to use, easy to set up, and has proven helpful to many people who have used it. Don't think you have to do all the steps outlined below in one day. Pace yourself.

These are the steps the system will take you through.

Introduction
What You Are Looking For
Step 1. Gather supplies for your filing system.
Step 2. File your family pedigree charts.
Step 3. Print a copy of the Circled 5-Generation Pedigree Chart.
Step 4. Separate the lines of your 4 grandparents by color.
Step 5. Put 16 hanging files into your box.
Step 6. Label the colored hanging file folders with your family surnames.
Step 7. Put a highlighted copy of your 5-generation pedigree chart in each of the colored folders.
Step 8. Set up a file for each family on your 5-generation pedigree chart.
Step 9. File the manila folders.
Step 10. Put these items in each family folder.
Step 11. Set up other useful files.
Step 12. Expand to other boxes as needed.
